SummaryThis is a student summer internship position with Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. The Woody Plants and Trails Intern will work with our woody plants and trails technician with the care and maintenance of hundreds of our trees and shrubs, miles of paths and trails, and stewardship of several significant garden spaces including Heathdale, Sam Graham Trees and Trail, and the Anderson Glades. The internship program runs May 6 through late August and includes some evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities*

• Planting, mulching, watering, pruning, labeling, GIS mapping of trees and shrubs
• Brush clearing, windfall and stormfall clean up, tree felling and removal
• Maintenance of trails and associated structures using hand and power tools

Required Qualifications*

• Graduated high school and currently enrolled in a college/university by the internship start date of May 6, 2024, or a December 2023 or spring 2024 college or university graduate.
• Hands on experience with tree and landscape tools and equipment
• Tree and shrub ID, planting and care
• GIS data collection and management
• Teamwork, leadership and communication
• These positions may require a valid driver's license and a motor vehicle record check in order to operate MBGNA vehicles.

Additional Information

• In-person positions are for May-August, 40 hours/week. There are opportunities for candidates interested in part-time work: please note this in your cover letter.
• Positions will be based at both Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, requiring travel between locations, plus several trips to two other MBGNA remote locations.
• Compensation: $15.00/hour
