Die Kuilsrivier-polisie het met ’n nuwe be-wusmakingsprojek oor die steeds stygen-de getalhuisinbrake in die gebied afge-skop.

Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, kommunika-siebeampte van die Kuilsrivier-polisie, sêhuisinbrake is steeds in die hele Kuilsri-vier-gebied aanwesig.

“Ons is baie bekommerd, omdat dit so’n geweldige toename toon,” sê hy.

In die polisie se nuwe bewusmakings-projek, word gebruik gemaak van uittrek-baniere in die vorm van ’n oogdruppel.

As hierdie oogdruppel-baniere in jouomgewing voorkom, is dit ’n teken dathuisinbrake hoogty vier in daardie ge-bied. Die bewusmakingsprojek begin opWoensdag 27 Maart.

Kapt. Van Niekerk sê hul ondersoeke nahuisinbrake toon daar is gewoonlik ver-dagte voertuie op die toneel.

“Ons gesels gewoonlik met bure en hullebevestig hulle het verdagte voertuie ge-sien, maar het gedink dit is gaste.”

Hy vra die gemeenskap om dit so gou asmoontlik te rapporteer en om bewus tewees van wat rondom hulle aangaan.

“As dit vandag by jou bure kan gebeur,

kan dit môre ook by jou plaasvind. Moetdit nie maklik maak vir skelms nie,” hethy gesê.

Die Kuilsrivier-polisie het in die tyd-perk van 18 Maart tot 24 Maart 12 verdag-tes in hegtenis geneem vir huisinbrake.

Twee verdagtes is in hegtenis geneemvir inbrake by ’n sake-onderneming.

Nog twaalf verdagtes is aangekla van po-ging tot voertuiginbrake.

Hy sê die gemeenskap moet ook bewuswees dat gesteelde goedere verkoop word.

City works for skaters tooA skateboarding task team was formedby the City of Cape Town to cater for theneed of skateborders around the city.

According to Brett Herron, maycomember for transport, roads and storm-water, the task team wants to open thechannels of communication betweenaffected parties. “In doing so we want todevelop a comprehensive strategy toensure the integration of skateboardingas a mode of transport and a form ofrecreation.”

He says this strategy will consist of theidentification of skating facilities and theinfrastructure requirements of skatingwithin the City, the formulation of amutually agreeable policy for the regula-tion of skateboarding, and the implemen-tation of practical steps that accommoda-te the needs of both skaters and thegeneral public.

About the awards ceremony she tells ofhow overwhelmed she was.

“I never thought that I would inspire peo-ple.

“I was up against a big blogger, and thenthey announced that my blog meant a lot tothe food industry. I was literally crying thewhole time.”Eat Out’s content director Anelda Greef

says that the award for the best local foodblog recognises the vital role that independ-ent bloggers play in promoting small pro-ducers and growing the local food industry.“We’re thrilled,” she said.

Firemen show youngboy the real deal

A nine-year-old boy recently had a real-lifefirefighting experience when he wasshown the ropes by real firemen in actionwhile they were busy extinguishing a veldfire in Kuils River.

According to Dhanrè Smit’s mom, Jac-quie Esterhuyse, they were driving homefrom Stellenbosch when they saw a veldfire blazing near the houses in St Dumasand Jagtershof.

They decided to approach the scene onlybecause their son just learned about the 107number at school and “he wanted to seewhat a real fire engine, firemen and a firescene looked like”, says Jacquie.

She says the firemen on duty were veryfriendly and said they could watch from asafe distance.

“They even said we could later take pic-tures of our son in one of the fire engines.”

She says that after the firehoses were se-cured one of the firemen quickly explainedto them what the different pieces of equip-ment were.

“He (the fireman) then helped Dhanrè in-to the fire truck, gave him a firefighters’hat and even posed for a photo,” says Jac-quie.

“It was an all round amazing experi-ence.”

She says her son now looks up to thesefriendly and caring firemen and the familywould like to thank them all for making

such a huge difference in their boy’s life.“All he now really wants to be is a fire-man,” she says laughing.

“He even said: ‘Oom het my hele lewe ge-maak’.”

“After telling the firemen that he getsbullied and that no one will believe him atschool when he tells them what had hap-pened, they said he was welcome any timeto bring his friends to the fire station fora tour,” says Jacquie.

“It was an emotional sight, but it trulyrepresented what firemen should be like,caring, in a sometimes thankless profes-sion.

“I believe if we make these good servicesand heroic and kind deeds public, moreyoung people will look up to and strive tobe like these firemen, policemen and othersinstead of fictional characters such asBen10,” she says.

V The City of Cape Town has introducedthe Wally 107 mascot as part of their publiceducation and awareness safety pro-grammes.

The mascot has been visiting schools,shopping malls and exhibitions to informthe public of the special 107 emergencynumber for emergency calls from a Telkomlandline.

They also warn children about the dan-ger of making hoax calls and putting otherpeople’s lives in danger.

“I am disturbed at the frequent appearanceof co*ckroaches in my home and want toknow when last the drains have beencleaned,” says Beverley Duncan, a residentfrom Sarepta, Kuils River who is one of theresidents calling upon the municipality toclean their drains.Beverley, who has been staying in Kuils

River for the past seven years, says she hasnever seen her drain being cleaned.“As a ratepayer in this area I am quite

disturbed and hope something will bedone,” she says.Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral

committee member for utility services,says that drains are often cleaned for co*ck-roaches.He says there is no set programme to

when they usually clean drains, but block-ages are an indication. He adds that pesti-cide is only applied on request when theyare aware of the complaints.“The appearance of co*ckroaches has nev-

er been so bad previously as now,” saysBeverley.At the Subcouncil 21 meeting which was

held on Wednesday 20 March the situationwas addressed by Councillor Steven Vuba.He said that “sprays on a regular basis tohouseholds and boundary chambers needsto implemented as soon as possible.”Sonnenberg adds that thewater and sani-

city’s urgent interdict application, Sanralagreed that it would take no further stepstowards implementing the toll road projectpending the city’s review application beingheard and that it would provide the citywith 45 days’ notice of its intention to startworking on the toll project.Such notification was received on 6

March 2013, whichmeans that Sanral couldcommence work on the project by 20 April2013 without first resolving the city’s con-cerns.“The city does not believe that Sanral has

been transparent in its engagement withthe city and hence we will ask the court tocompel Sanral to provide all informationnecessary regarding this project as amatterof urgency. This will allow the review proc-ess to be concluded fairly and speedily,”saidCouncillor BrettHerron,mayoral com-mittee member for transport, roads andstormwater.According to Herron, Sanral has thus far

refused to share information relating to thecost of the tollroads, the magnitude of thetoll fees and impact on road users with thecity.“The city does not want a similar situa-

tion to the one in Gauteng,” he said.The abovementioned court application to

review the decisions of Sanral and the min-isters of transport and environment, whichwill make the toll roads possible, was madeto the Western Cape High Court in Marchlast year.This review has not yet been concluded

and the city believes that Sanral’s decisionto go ahead with this project before the

court has decided to the review application,undermines the right of the city and its peo-ple to have the court determine the lawful-ness of the project before it commences.“The City of Cape Town has made every

reasonable effort to resolve the dispute re-garding the tolling of the N1 and N2 intoCapeTown through the inter-governmentaldispute process. We believe the decisionswhich authorise the tolling of the N1 andN2 are unlawful, unreasonable and proce-durally unfair,” said Herron.In its notice to the city on 6March, Sanral

indicated its intention to conclude a conces-sion contract with the preferred bidder –theProteaParkwaysConsortium–or if nec-essary the reserve bidder, at an unspecifiedtime after 20 April 2013.Sanral has also notified the city that it in-

never said it intends to start with theproject or to conclude the concession con-tract on the 20 April 2013.“Sanral, through its lawyers, did send a

A skateboarding task team was formed bythe City of Cape Town to cater for the needof skateboarders around the city.

According to Brett Herron, mayco mem-ber for transport, roads and stormwater, thetask team wants to open the channels of com-munication between affected parties to solvemutual issues.

“In doing so we want to develop a compre-hensive strategy to ensure the integration ofskateboarding as a mode of transport and aform of recreation.”

He says this strategy will consist of theidentification of skating facilities and the in-frastructure requirements of skating withinthe city, the formulation of a mutually agree-able policy for the regulation of skateboard-ing, and the implementation of practical

steps that accommodate the needs of bothskaters and the general public, in otherwords a comprehensive policy to protectboth skaters and the city.

“It is with great optimism that I greet theformation of this task team.

“I believe that this forum gives us everychance of finding common ground betweenthe city, skateboarders and the non-skate-boarding public,” Herron said.

Marco Morgan, speaking on behalf of theNational Skate Collective, has welcomed thepositive approach taken by the city in thisregard.

He and the rest of the team representingthe skating community are looking forwardto the imminent commencement of sched-uled monthly meetings.

The information obtained duringthe borehole/well-point registrationprocess is required for statistical da-ta purposes only and no charges arelevied.

There has been a steady increasein the number of boreholes and well-point registrations across the city –especially during March this year,which is also the city’s WaterMonth.

Apart from information, ownerswill also receive a new borehole/well-point sign which must be prom-inently displayed on the boundaryof the premises, upon registration.

The effective use of boreholes andwell-points for non-drinking pur-poses, such as irrigating gardens, re-duces the demand on drinking waterfrom the city’s water mains, and istherefore encouraged.

The global movement Earth Hour has at-tracted communities as well as businesses tounite in it’s mission to reduce the use of elec-tricity.

Leading South African retailer Acker-mans, whose head office is in Kuils River,has announced a comprehensive strategy tocut its electricity usage by as much as 49 %by the end of this year.

On Saturday 23 March during Earth Hourpeople across the world united and protectedthe planet by switching off lights between20:30 and 21:30 in their local time zone.

Project Swatt, a multi-dimensional ap-proach for Ackermans to be more energy effi-cient, was launched at the end of last year

and has brought about a visible reduction inelectricity consumption.

Ackermans’ general manager for opera-tion processes, Jonathan Pratt says: “Duringthe 2012 financial year, Ackermans utilisedenough electricity to power 7 619 houses.

This realisation, together with our com-mitment through our Ububele corporate so-cial investment project to do business re-sponsibly and to maintain the respect of em-ployees and customers, motivated us tolaunch this energy saving project.”

Other electricity saving initiatives in Ack-ermans stores include old lighting technolo-gy that will be replaced and online electricitymeters will be used to monitor the electricity

usage per store.Pratt says that through these interven-

tions they are planning to reduce their ener-gy consumption on lighting by 49 % in storeswithin the next 10 to 12 months.

Pratt adds that initiatives will also berolled out at support centres with the samesaving in consumption targets.

“Just as Earth Hour aims to encourage aninterconnected global community to sharethe opportunities of creating a sustainableplanet, so should all South African business-es and individuals embrace this occasion.

“Let us join hands to work together to-wards reducing the combined carbon foot-print,” he says.

yes, but we can’t put the kettle on. Andthe small gas stove used during the lastseason of load shedding, is packed awaysomewhere where one would definitelynot find it in the dark. Especially notwith the torch batteries that have rundown for no reason.Sooo what shall we do then? Watch a

bit of TV? Or not. That also operates onelectricity, remember? Half an hour to go.What do people who can only rely on

candle or paraffin lamp power? Playcards? (Where did we put those again?)They probably just sit down and chat.

Do families still have simple conversa-tions or does it interfere with their TV orcellphone time. Now 20 minutes to go –20 minutes to ponder on the real value ofelectricity, our dependence on it – andalso what it took away from us. We’vegiven too much power away, it seems,and that does humankind no good, nevermind the planet.

Lucy doesn’t mind not having breasts somuch, but it is walking around bald thatreally irritates her.Lucy Greenwood who lives in Edge-

mead was first diagnosed with breastcancer in 2006.“I received the news just before the

Easter weekend and that following weekmy left breast was removed,” says theoutgoing 43-year-old.At that time shewasworking as a driv-

er.When she went back to work her em-

ployer gave her the option of taking anoffice job instead, which she did.“I hated it. It was very precise and ad-

ministrative. I wasn’t allowed to moti-vate and encourage the people aroundme. I wasn’t allowed to be what Godmade me to be,” she says.It was this need to be of help to others

that saw her get involved as a volunteerduring the xenophobic incidents in DuNoon.Today she works as a full-time field

worker for Salt, a non-profit organisa-tion that helps with the vast needs of thelocal communities of Table View, Mil-nerton, Du Noon and Joe Slovo settle-ments.Salt currently supplies 900 food par-

cels everymonth to a number of projectsand clinics which include the Keep achild in School project, Child Welfare,TLC (helping street children) and othercommunity based charity projects.“I am on the road a lot, and network

between clinics and people who needhelp. I’m really all over the place,” Lucysays.“In a community of 60 000 there are

manypeoplewhoare taking strain.Theycan go to the clinic but their needs arenot necessarily being met. I try to findthose people and help them,” she elabo-rates.“And sometimes it is not a big thing

they need.”As is the case with so much in life, it

is a matter of perception and context.What might not be something “big” forLucy, could make her a “miracle work-er” in the eyes of those she helps.It is Lucy’s kind heart to continuously

beof service to others, thathaspromptedColleen Pietersen (founder of TLC), tostart an initiative to help Lucy, after hercancer returned last year.

“She received chemotherapy yester-day but here she is, ready to go to worktoday,” Colleen says, pointing to herdear friend whose right breast has alsonow been removed.“I have known many people with can-

cer but Lucy has really touched myheart. She is such a humble sweetie-pie.She always gives of herself in helpingothers.“God has placed it on my heart to do

something for this woman who has im-pacted the community so much and Iwant her to live the lifestyle that Godwants for her. She shouldn’t have toshoulder the financial burden of the ter-rible sickness alone,” Colleen says.Followingher secondmastectomy, Lu-

cy also had to have her gall bladder re-moved. The port inserted into her chestto facilitate the easier administering ofthe chemotherapy saw her developing ablood clot as well.“The end of last year was rough...”When asked to elaborate on her practi-

“Mymusic is organic andpure, it’s from theheart,” says Can Skylark.And that’s why she decided on naming

her debut album, Pure.Can Skylark describes her jazzy adult

contemporary music aseclectic and organic. “It’srich in timbre and texture,”’she says.While she hasn’t officially

launched Pure yet, her songsare already playing on radiostations like KFM 94.5 andher album is for sale online.Can says itwaswhile doing

drama at Milnerton High School that shediscovered her love of music. “That’s howI got my wings for music,” she says.Her parents steered her in amore lucrati-

ve direction though and she studied and

worked as a graphic designer, while pursu-ing her music passions part time.She’s been involved in big musical-tribu-

tes shows, like Milestones to the Millenni-um that was on at The Roxy Review Bar re-cently and Rough Diamonds and Divas,which played at the Barnyard Theatre.

Eventually, she wasapproached by a produ-cer, who wanted to re-cord her own originalsongs.“I’ve always had a ye-

arning to do my ownstuff,” Can admits. Beingapproached by a big na-me in the industry gave

her the confidence boost she needed to giveit a shot.“I can’t believe the response I’ve been get-

ting,” she says.Can started working on Pure in 2007.

“It was a labour of love, really. I neededthe album to speak for me.”Alongwith an impressive list of SouthAf-

rican radio stations playing her work,Can’smusic has also been playlisted on Eu-ropean stations.“It’s been doing quite well actually,” she

says.She is also involved in community work

and believes it’s important to give back tothe people who support her. She helps withcharity shows and mentoring young ar-tists.“I believe in planting seeds,” she says.For now, Can Skylark is selling her al-

Local motocross rider Dylan Stokes,who won the 125cc class at the CapeTownNational ClubChampionship at

theMelkbosMotocrossTrackon16March,intends to make the title his own at theSouth African National Motocross Cham-pionship that will be held at the same ven-ue this coming weekend.The 16-year-old Kenridge resident is

putting in the work necessary to pull it off.Aside from twohours in the gymeverydayand rides at the track three times a week,he does muaythai, runs and cycles. Onraceday, hepreparesbywalking the track,listening to music and discussing strategywith coach Dean Hoffman.

AmbitionIt’s clear that the preparation pays off.At the Dirt Bronco National near

Krugersdorp this year, he had a good firstand second heat, then suffered some badluck when his gear shifter snapped off inthe third heat – but he still managed to tiein second place for the day.Stokes, who attends Fairmont High

School in Durbanville, has ambitions be-yond South Africa’s borders too.“I’d love to have the opportunity to go

overseas and participate in a few races. IfI could do a few races in America, the UKand Europe, that would be fantastic.”

Throttle“Motocross isn’t easy,” says Stokes. “It

takes hard work and determination to getthe results you’re looking for. But there’sno better feeling than getting on your bike,opening up that throttle and having a

blast.”Round 2 of the 2013 National Motocross

Championship will be held at the MelkbosMX track near the R27 on Saturday andSunday 30 and 31 March. A weekend passcosts R60; children under 13 get in free. Rac-ing starts at 10:30 on Saturday and 08:00 onSunday. Sunday’s racing will be followedby aMonster Energy after-party from 16:00.
